Climbing

Initial payment: pro rata
When you sign up for Climbing YEAR or Climbing FLEX, you pay a pro rata amount.

Direct debit
Thereafter, an instalment is debited via direct debit in the first week of every month.

Cancelling is simple
Send an email to usc@uscsport.nl, or cancel your membership yourself via the ‘My USC’ website. Your membership will then end on the last day of that month.*

*If you cancel a FLEX membership in the same month in which you purchased it, the FLEX membership will end on the last day of the following month. This means that at least one monthly payment will always be debited via direct debit before a FLEX membership expires.

Booking

• You can book – subject to availability – right up until the start of the class or training session.
• You can book up to 6 days in advance.
• You may have a maximum of 3 active bookings in your name for the next 6 days.

• For climbing and bouldering, you book a one-hour time slot, for example from 17.00 to 18.00, during which you arrive.
• You may enter during the time slot you have booked. If you have booked a time slot starting at 17.00, you may enter between 17.00 and 18.00. You may not enter before the start or after the end of your time slot.
• Are you running late? In that case, we’ll record it as a no-show. You can, however, book straight away for the next time slot (if there’s space) and start exercising straight away.
• There’s no end time – you can climb for as long as you like (although we do do go to bed at some point…).

Check-in

• Download the My USC Amsterdam app (Android or iOS) to gain entry to USC.
• On arrival, simply scan the QR code on the access gate at the USC venue using the app.

1. The wall is only accessible if you have permission from USC to climb or are a member of ASAC.
2. Unfortunately, we cannot scan membership cards from other climbing centres. Have you recently obtained your K2 certificate? Please send proof (showing your name and the date) to sportklimmen@uscsport.nl.
3. If you’re already an experienced independent climber, you can book a safety check. You can do this via the form under ‘Safety Check’. You must bring your own climbing partner.
4. Your registration as a climber with USC is valid for 15 months from the date of your last visit. Have you not been here for a long time and has your climbing registration expired? Please send details of your climbing experience in the meantime to sportklimmen@uscsport.nl. If you haven’t climbed anywhere else in the meantime, we may ask you to demonstrate your climbing ability again.
5. At USC, it is not possible to allow guests to climb if they are unable to belay independently.

If you are an experienced climber, you can get access if you demonstrate your belaying and climbing skills to one of our USC climbing instructors. You have to bring your own climbing partner.

Since 2010, the Amsterdam Student Alpine Club has been based at the USC climbing centre. Climbing sessions take place on fixed evenings. The club also organises training sessions and courses. The ASAC Open club championships are an annual event. The club regularly organises climbing trips abroad and other events. Check asac.nl.

General rules

• Climbing is permitted if you are on our climbing list.
• Book a safety check using the form under ‘Book a safety check’ on this page.
• Climbing is at your own risk.
• Check the online timetable for hall availability and to make a booking (compulsory!).
• Put your belongings away in the cupboard.
• Reel in the ropes if you are the last climber of the day.
• No glass in the climbing hall.
• You are not permitted to climb with your upper body bare.
• You must not climb barefoot.

Safety rules

• Stay focused on your own safety and that of others.
• Always use the partner check system before and after climbing.
• Tie in immediately using a figure-of-eight knot or a double bowline.
• Give other climbers plenty of space.
• Always keep one hand on the belay rope.
• Belay using the 5-step technique or tunnel technique.
• The maximum height without a rope is up to the first bolt.
• Unnecessary climbing equipment on your harness is not permitted.
• Never break the belay chain whilst climbing.
• You are not permitted to wear jewellery whilst climbing.
• No alcohol or drugs before or whilst climbing.

Want to lead climb? Then please also check the following:

• Lead climbing is permitted provided both the climber and the belayer have permission from USC.
• Be considerate of other climbers.
• Clip into all bolts. Using the first bolt is optional.
• Use a belay mat.
• Always clip the rope back into the two top carabiners.
• You can borrow a rope from the desk in front of the lead-climbing bridge.
• Lead climbing on ropes 1 and 17 is not permitted.
• Lead climbing is not permitted if there are 6 or more teams in the hall.
